At work yesterday a patient commented that it looked like I didn’t have any lenses in my frame! I see a slight bluish reflection at times when looking at them, so I can see the lenses, but it’s great.Ī nice subjective impression HL, thank you! Can you expand on the Sapphire 360 a bit? I know the original Sapphire has had some noticeable issues over the years as both the color reflex changes rather dramatically (from it's original nice deep cobalt blue reflex to a much more noticeable (and to me very ugly) almost sky blue to blue green reflex. I also got the new Crizal Sapphire 360 AR and it’s excellent. My other progressives are very good but these are better. The differences are subtle but definitely there. I didn’t get a chance to try my other glasses at work yesterday because we were so busy. The channel isn’t extremely wide but it’s placed just right so it’s very comfortable. They work very well with a desktop monitor as long as the monitor is not too high. With the other pair I do need to slightly adjust my head up to see the top of the page. I do notice that with the new X lense allows me to see from the top of the page to the bottom without adjusting my head. The reading area is the width of a page in a hardback book which is very decent with a +2.50 add. The width of the channel and reading are are very close in both pairs, I can’t see any difference. The other lenses are decent but don’t have quite the clarity. When I look through the temporal part of the distance in the glasses, the X is slightly clearer, almost as clear as straight ahead. But is it better? So I decided to compare them side by side with my most recent digital progressive that is the same RX and similar size. ![]() It’s certainly as good as any progressive I have ever worn and I have worn many. My first impression of the Varilux X was positive. I can easily wear most progressives, there have been just a few I found inferior. I am about a -.75 and a -.1.50 with around a diopter of astigmatism and a +2.50 add. Patients need to understand the quality difference in what they are getting at your office.I got myself a pair of Varilux X lenses a couple of days ago and thought I should write a review of them. Explain the technology behind whatever brand of lens you recommend versus lenses they may find cheaper elsewhere. For rare instances where progression length must be specified, stay within 8mm and 11mm (11mm compromises near). A practitioner should very rarely need to specify a progression length (again, if a PAL does not perform well in “automatic mode,” consider finding another progressive). Most modern designs have progression lengths which automatically vary to provide maximum performance over a range of fitting heights.Always ensure the frame shape will not cut off the reading zone (even if you have satisfied the minimum recommended fitting height, if the nasal portion of the frame sweeps up, you may be cutting off the near zone). For zyl frames, remember to add some height to account for the bevel. Always measure from pupil center to the deepest point of the frame- even if that point is not directly below the pupil. If a progressive lens does not perform well when fit to pupil center, consider finding another design! In the past, it was recommended to drop segment heights by a couple millimeters from the pupil however, a well-designed progressive lens should provide its best performance when fit to pupil center. If a manufacturer is making performance-based claims, ask to see data to back up the claims. Always prescribe the best design technology for your patient’s needs.Tips for Successfully Fitting Progressive Lenses Vision should feel real world, not like they are behind lenses. The goal of a quality progressive lens is for the patient to just put them on and go. Many patients report having to turn their heads too much when they look over their shoulders when driving, or having to constantly adjust their chin position on the computer.
